Malfunction in 01 Hyundai Accent fuel gauge?

I have a 2001 Hyundai Accent, a few days ago I started noticing that the fuel gauge doesn't go higher than half of the tank, even when its full. Yesterday it left me stranded in the middle of the road with no fuel and no gas station whatsoever near me.

My question is: What could be the problem? In case is the fuel sender, how to access to it (without having to dismount the fuel tank) ?

Thanks a lot, I am currently unemployed so I cant afford taking the car to the mechanic, I have to try and do this myself the most economic way possible.
