ARLINGTON, Va. . -- Backup goalie Michael Neuvirth is being loaned by the Washington Capitals to their AHL affiliate in Hershey for a conditioning program after missing time with a lower-body injury. The Capitals announced the move Thursday. Neuvirth hasnt played for the Capitals since Nov. 22. A week later, he missed a scheduled start after hurting himself when he stepped on a puck during warmups. In seven games with Washington this season, Neuvirth is 2-3-1 with a 2.83 goals-against average and .912 save percentage. In 128 career NHL games, all with the Capitals, he is 57-38-12 with seven shutouts, a 2.67 GAA and a .910 save percentage. Washington plays at the Florida Panthers on Friday. . Fielding questions after the announcement, Yzerman noted that the brain trust had to take a chance on Stamkos being healthy, since they would be unable to add him to the roster later on. "If hes healthy hes one of the 25 best players, obviously, in Canada," Yzerman said after the roster announcement. . KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- Sporting Kansas City has signed forward Jacob Peterson, a former member of the American under-20 mens national team. Peterson was introduced along with newcomers Paulo Nagamura and Bobby Convey during a news conference Thursday at Livestrong Sporting Park. Peterson, who played U.S. college soccer at Indiana, was picked 21st in the 2006 MLS SupperDraft by Colorado. . He started 17 games as a rookie, scoring four goals with three assists. He wound up making 92 appearances for the Rapids before being traded to Toronto FC for the 2010 season. He was traded again to San Jose last year. Peterson has nine goals and 10 assists in 138 regular-season games over six professional seasons. ' ' '
