Acest tip de diabet se manifesta printr-o scadere a secretiei de insulina in pancreas si totodata o crestere a rezistentei periferice la insulina, astfel ca glucoza nu mai patrunde in celule, iar concentratia acesteia creste in sange. Concentratia glucozei in sange este numita glicemie si adesea, alaturi de hemoglobina glicozilata, aceasta constanta aduce multe informatii despre diabet, fiind dozata la fiecare vizita la medic. Obezitatea, in special cea abdominala, reprezinta o adevarata sursa de factori de risc pentru multiple afectiuni. Tesutul gras, in special cel din jurul abdomenului, functioneaza ca un adevarat organ, cu functii endocrine un organ care nu prezinta actiuni benefice pentru sanatate. De aceea o dieta a pacientului diabetic care asociaza supraponderabilitate va fi initial hipocalorica, astfel incat pacientul sa slabeasca lent. Apoi acesta dieta devine o dieta de mentinere, saraca in zaharuri si carbohidrati, dar bogata in fibre, vitamine si minerale. Desi este adesea recomandat uleiul extravirgin, totusi diabeticul, mai ales cel supraponderal, ar trebui sa consume cu foarte mare atentie uleiul. Puteti consuma insa masline. Grasimile trebuie evitate cat mai mult, uleiul folosit cat mai rar in salate sau mancaruri, ciorbe etc. Daca se poate, nu folositi deloc, chiar daca aveti in casa ulei extravirgin. Evitati de asemenea preparatele care nu se pot gati decat cu ulei. In privinta altor alimente bogate in grasimi, este recomandat sa evitati consumul de cascaval, alimente care contin ulei, unt, margarina, smantana, caimac, evitati consumul carnii de porc chiar si slaba sau a carnurilor din comert care sunt injectate. Este recomandata carnea BIO sunt destui producatori pe piata romaneasca. Carnea de curcan este cea mai recomandata, apoi cea de peste, pui si fructe de mare. Cartofii, orezul, fainoasele, pastele, zaharul si orice aliment care contine zahar atentie si la sosurile bogate in zahar, la iaurturile care contin zahar cititi eticheta produselor trebuie scoase din alimentatie, cel putin pana la un nivel acceptat al glicemiei. Zaharul va fi inlocuit cu indulcitori artificiali. La pofte mari, puteti alege un sortiment de dulceata, ciocolata sau biscuiti sortimente speciale pentru cei care sufera de diabet, indulcite doar cu indulcitori artificiali.
