they immediately get an invitation to "change your SafeSearch setting" right there on the screen. I love things that are user-friendly but, for kids, that may be a bit too user-friendly. At the very least, Microsoft would be better off following Google's example by requiring the user to manually go into the preference area to change the settings. It wouldn't stop a cybersavvy teen from finding porn, but it would at least slow them down a bit. And it probably would stop younger users from finding it. Another solution would be to have a family version of Bing with a different URL. The best solution is probably simply not to let porn videos play within Bing. I'm not suggesting there is a silver bullet to this problem and I understand that Microsoft may have been caught by surprise over this, but it strikes me that a solution can be found and quickly implemented. In the meantime I did get an e-mail today from Microsoft's Chuck Cosson telling me, "today we provided filtering companies as well as network administrators with a simple solution for restricting Bing to filtered searches. http://tubetria.mobi/ " And he added, "while we give some further thought to Bing, I think it's also still our thinking that safe search settings on a single search engine can't substitute for a complete parental control offering--one reason to work with the filtering companies for example, but also that will inform how we respond here over time. I agree. I don't think it's appropriate to demand that Microsoft make its search engine entirely kid-friendly. Porn may be inappropriate for kids and distasteful to some, but the type of porn you find on Bing is legal material and adults should have a right to search for it. I think parents do have the responsibility to set and enforce rules for their kids and, in some cases, monitor what their kids are doing online. But I also think Microsoft needs to put a bit more thought into how it can better empower parents to shield their kids from inappropriate material without censoring search results for adults. A Texas man was arrested after a 9-year-old relative was caught at school searching pornography to learn about what the creep had been doing to her, court documents reveal. Anthony Garay, 31, of San Antonio, faces charges of continuous sexual abuse of a child, a first-degree felony, the San Antonio Express-News reports. He remained jailed as of late Wednesday in Bexar County Jail on $75, 000 bond, jail officials said. Garay, according to an arrest affidavit, had allegedly been sexually assaulting the girl and her sister for at least a year. The allegations surfaced on May 16, when a teacher at Elm Creek Elementary School spotted one of the victims scouring for porn on a school-issued iPad, according to court documents. When asked why she was searching the graphic content during class, the girl responded that she was trying to learn more about what Garay was doing to her all the time at night, not letting her sleep, according to court documents. An investigator from Child Protective Services responded to the school to interview the girl after being contacted by her teacher. She told the investigator that the abuse had been going on at her home in San Antonio since she was at least 8 years old. The man had previously been investigated by CPS officials for allegedly sexually abusing two female relatives, the investigator later discovered. Deputies from the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office arrested Garay on Wednesday. A message seeking comment from CPS officials was not immediately returned Thursday. Two weeks ago, I interviewed Seth Stephens-Davidowitz, author of Everybody Lies , a new book that uses data on America’s Google habits as an insight into our national consciousness. Two findings from the book dominated the conversation: America is riddled with racist and selfish people, and there may be a self-induced abortion crisis in this country. But there was plenty more revelatory data in the book that we didn’t cover. So I wanted to follow up with Stephens-Davidowitz to talk about some of the other provocative claims he is making. I was particularly interested in sexuality and online porn. If, as Stephens-Davidowitz puts it, “Google is a digital truth serum, ” then what else does it tell us about our private thoughts and desires? What else are we hiding from our friends, neighbors, and colleagues. A lot, apparently. Among other things, Stephens-Davidowitz’s data suggests that there are more gay men in the closet than we think; that many men prefer overweight women to skinny women but are afraid to act on it; that married women are disproportionately worried their husband is gay; that a lot of straight women watch lesbian porn; and that porn featuring violence against women is more popular among women than men. I asked Stephens-Davidowitz to explain the data behind all of this. Here’s what he told me. Sean Illing. Last time we spoke, I asked you about the most surprising or shocking finding in your research. We talked about racism and the possibility of a self-induced abortion crisis in America. Here I want to dive into something a little lighter: sexuality and online porn. What did you learn about this. Seth Stephens-Davidowitz. Porn is the biggest development in sexuality research ever. I don't understand how social scientists weren't begging Pornhub for their data. I was one of the only ones. I sent some of my results to some of the most famous sociologists and sex researchers in the world. Many of them had no interest. Sean Illing. Why does porn data offer such unique insight. Seth Stephens-Davidowitz. Well, to learn about sex, the main approach was to ask people. But people lie on sensitive topics such as sex. Sean Illing. You combed through the data — what did it say about us. Seth Stephens-Davidowitz. There’s a lot of variation in what people like. Probably 30 percent of people exclusively watch stuff that you would find disgusting. Sean Illing. Why focus on sex? Were you initially interested in this, or did the data lead you to it. Seth Stephens-Davidowitz. It’s a book about human nature. Sex is a big part of human nature. Some reviews of Everybody Lies have criticized me for being obsessed with sex.
